Abstract

This study is entitled “the use of reward and punishment in english
teaching and learning (a qualitative study at senior high school 1 kutasari)”.
The objective of this study was to know the implementation of reward and
punishment in teaching English and to get the teachers’ opinion about reward
and punishment. The data was taken at SMA N 1 Kutasari. The subject of this
research was all of English teachers. The number of teachers was 3. This
research used two kinds of methods to collect the data; observation and
questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it was concluded that the result of
observation, teachers gave types of reward praise and tribute to the students
for example, the teachers said “great”, “nice”, “good”, “very good”, “nice
try”, and then additional score. The teachers also gave types of punishment
discipline and reprimand, for example when the teacher told the students to
wear the uniform well or students did not pay attention during the learning
process, students is ordered by teacher to stay outside the class because they
did not do task or students did not bring the dictionary. The result of
questionnaire, one of the example the teachers stated that reward and
punishment were important for students because the students can more active
and can learn more. Beside that the teachers stated the purpose of
implementing reward was to make students feel appreciated with their work
while the punishment was to make the students aware of the mistake. They
argued that the students could be motivated in the learning process. It also
made students enthusiastic in joining the class. And by giving punishment, it
made students to learn by their mistakes.
