Abstract
Islamic Values in the Punakawan Characters of Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet Theatre) aims to: (1) explore the history of Wayang Kulit and the Punakawan characters, (2) explain the correlation between Islam and Wayang Kulit, and (3) identify the Islamic values embedded in the Punakawan characters. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing data collection techniques such as (1) observation of the subject under study, (2) interviews, and (3) documentation to gather supporting materials for the research. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The history of Wayang Kulit traces back to the prehistoric era when it was used as a medium for ancestral worship and spiritual rituals. It later evolved during the Hindu-Buddhist period, becoming a tool for disseminating Hindu-Buddhist teachings. During the Islamic period, Wayang Kulit was utilized by Islamic missionaries (Wali) as a medium for religious propagation. During the colonial era, it served primarily as a form of entertainment for both the indigenous people and the colonizers. 2. The connection between Islam and Wayang Kulit is evident in its use as a medium for Islamic dawah (propagation) and the incorporation of Islamic symbols within its narratives. 3. The Islamic values inherent in the Punakawan characters include, Semar Faith and piety, Gareng Gentleness and kindness, Petruk Generosity and charity, Bagong/Bawor Self-reflection and introspection. In conclusion, the history of Wayang Kulit spans from its origins in the prehistoric era to its evolution through Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and colonial periods. Its connection to Islam is reflected in its role as a medium for dawah by the Walisongo and the presence of Islamic symbols in its stories. Additionally, the Punakawan characters Semar, Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong/Bawor each embody distinct Islamic values.
