Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types and functions of speech acts in the
movie "The Greatest Showman," using George Yule's 1996 theory. Speech act is
one of The research classifies and identifies the types of illocutionary speech acts
found in the film, analyzing 17 data using Yule's five types: declarations,
representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. This research used
descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The findings show that
representative speech acts, especially asserting, are the most commonly used,
taking important roles in the story's growth and character development. The
frequent use of assertions emphasizes their importance in conveying the
characters' beliefs and moving the story forward. This research emphasizes how
speech acts help characters communicate and interact, adding depth to the story.
