Abstract

Problem solving ability is one of the basic competency standards and mathematical competencies developed in Permendiknas number 22 of 2006. In addition to problem solving abilities, the development of students' potential as mentioned in the national education goals can also be realized through extracurricular activities. This study aims to describe the ability of problem solving in solving the problem of flat figure in terms of extracurricular activities in SMP Negeri 4 Kutasari. The subjects of this study were seventh grade junior high school students. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling technique. The results of data analysis show that students who take part in academic extracurricular activities already have good problem solving abilities, only they have constraints in determining the value of variable x. They tend to think deductively in working on problems, systematically in their writing, and look confident in answering questions. While students who take part in non-academic extracurricular activities, they have problems in counting, are less systematic in their writing, look hesitant and think long in answering questions, and can think inductively even though the process used is still wrong. Based on the conclusions obtained, the researcher suggests that students are accustomed to practicing non-routine questions and are accustomed to checking answers after working on the questions.
