Abstract

This research was conducted because students were found to have problems in using capital letters correctly based on the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI). This study aimed to determine the students' incorrect use of capital letters in writing narrative essays. This was a type of qualitative research. The participants of this study were the teacher and the students of grade VB, and the school principals. The data in this study were written documents of students namely their narrative essays and the results of interviews using Google Form. The data were analyzed by the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that the number of errors made by students in writing narrative essays was different from one another. The total errors made by students were 380 errors consisting of the use of capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and in the middle of a sentence, geographic names, and month names. These problems happened because they found it difficult to express their fantasies in written form, to determine their ideas or to describe the main ideas, to arrange storylines, to imagine the story, to write the contents of an essay, to develop a sentence, to choose the right vocabularies. Therefore, the teacher made some efforts such as looking for additional references and having more handouts. Then, these additional references are distributed to students through the Whatsapp group of grade VB, so that students can increase their knowledge. Besides that, the principal also makes a policy, one of which is by guiding students and assigning the class teachers to guide students with writing difficulties. Additional hours are also provided by the class teachers to guide the students.
