The research aims to describe the mathematical communication skills of
SMP Negeri 3 Purwokertos students in solving word problems viewed from the
gender on social arithmetic material. The research is qualitative descriptive.
Samples were taken through purposive sampling, in which the students were
grouped based on gender consisting of 3 male and 3 female students. The
research instruments were mathematical communication skill tests, interviews,
and documentation. The data validation test used technique triangulation test. The
research result indicates that the male students show mathematical
communication skill in solving story problems only until the second step, namely
stating problems into mathematical ideas and explain written problem situations
in the form of mathematical model. Meanwhile, the female students are able to
complete the three steps of mathematical communication skill in solving word
problems, namely stating the problem into mathematical ideas, explaining written
problem situation in the form of mathematical model and communicating the
mathematical idea in written form using their own words.
