Abstract
This study was aimed at finding out 1) the English teaching techniques used by the teacher, 2) the students’ perception toward teacher’s teaching techniques used in English classes. The method used was decriptive research, in which questionnaire and interview were used to elicit the data. The participants of this study were the 10th Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Sokaraja in Academic year 2018/2019. The research findings of the research revealed that the English teaching techniques used by the teacher were Direct Technique, Think Pair Share, and Group Investigation. Those three techniques belongs to Contextual Teaching and Learning. According to students’ answer from questionnaire and interview students had positive perception toward those three techniques. The questionnaire result revealed that most of students had positive perception toward direct technique (72.0%), think pair share (67.2%) and group investigation (70.56%). The result of questionnaire was supported by interview result which most of students felt that techniques used by teacher gave benefits for them. Direct technique helped students to understand material well and improve their activeness in the classroom because teacher corrected their mistakes and gave extended practice. However, only a few students who had negative perception toward direct technique because she felt that teacher’s explanation was not clear enough. Think pair share technique helped students to share their ideas orally and helped them to improve their speaking skill. However, only a few students who had negative perception toward think pair share because they were not confident enough to speak English, so they were afraid and not really enthusiastic. Group investigation helped students to improve their higher order thinking, speaking skill and their teamwork.
