Abstract

This study aimed to determine the type of motivation and highest motivation of Vocational High School 3 Purwokerto students in learning English. This research was conducted at Vocational High School 3 Purwokerto in eleventh grade students. The type of this research was a survey using questionnaire and interview as the instruments. From the research that had been done, the result showed that there were 2 types of motivation of Vocational High School 3 Purwokerto students in learning English. The first was instrumental motivation with a percentage of 69% and the second was integrative motivation with a percentage of 67%. While the highest motivation of students learning English was instrumental motivation with an average mean of 3.96. Instrumental motivation includes aspects of future jobs/ careers with a mean of 4.06; social aspects of prestige with a mean of 3.99; and academic aspects with a mean of 3.83. In addition integrative motivation with an average mean of 3.88 includes aspects of cultural and life style with a mean of 3.82; community involvement with mean 3.96 and aspects of English Preference with mean 3.87. Based on the interview results, students were motivated to learn English because of some reasons i.e.: get better job in the future; more respected by others by using English; study abroad and get good grades; be interested in foreign culture; communicate with the other people from different culture; and happy to use English in their activities.
