Abstract

The research titled "Development and Philosophy of Salem Batik in Salem
district, Brebes Regency (1960-2006)"aims to achieve the following objectives:
(1) uncover the history and development of Salem batik in Salem district, Brebes
Regency, (2) elucidate the motifs and philosophical values of Salem batik in
Salem district, Brebes Regency from 1960 to 2006, and (3) describe the
preservation and identity recognition of Salem batik among the community in
Salem district, Brebes Regency. The methodology employed in this research is
Historical Methodology, encompassing four steps: (1) Heuristic, Oral interviews,
observations, and documentation were used to collect data, (2) Criticism, which
includes source criticism involving external criticism (authenticity assessment)
and internal criticism (credibility of source content), (3) Interpretation of data
sources, and (4)Historiography or historical writing. The findings indicate that
Salem batik is a heritage passed down through generations, originating from batik
fabrics used during the Mataram Kingdom around the 17th century,
initially reserved for specific individuals. Salem batik emerged due to its spread
through kingdom conflicts during the Mataram Kingdom around the 17th century,
reaching Salem district, particularly in the villages of Bentar and Bentarsari.
Secondly, Salem batik encompasses diverse patterns and motifs, each carrying a
philosophy that reflects local customs and the surrounding environment. Thirdly,
efforts are being made to preserve Salem batik among the younger generation,
particularly those studying in educational institutions such as SMA Negeri
01Salem, where batik-making is integrated into the Crafts subject for 10th and
11th-grade students. Salem batik has become a symbol of identity for Brebes
regency, known as the distinctive batik of Brebes. This recognition is exemplified
by its adoption as the official uniform for government agencies in Brebes regency
every Wednesday and Thursday.
