Abstract

This research objective was to know whether or not round table discussion could improve the students’ participation. The subject of this research was first grade of Junior High School students of Muhammadiyah Maos in 2017/2018 Academic Year. The number of students was 33. The type of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research used four kinds of methods to collect the data; observation, questionnaire, interview and test. Based on the data analysis, it was concluded that the research was successful. It was proved by observation results. The participation in pre-activity was 7.57%, improved into 39.38% in cycle 1, and improved into 75.74% in cycle 2. The average of questionnaire’s result was 89.08%. It showed that the students gave positive response in implementing round table discussion in reading class. All students being interviewed said that they were so excited and motivated in joining the teaching learning process. Based on the pre test result was 56.81%, improved into 60.90% in cycle 1, and improved into 85.60% in cycle 2. In conclusion, round table discussion improved students’ participation in reading class in first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah Maos in 2017/2018 Academic Year.
