Abstract
This research was aimed at finding out 1) students‟ perception on their
speaking problems at fourth semester of English Education department of
Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, and 2) the most influencing factor on
students‟ perception. The method utilized in this research was descriptive survey
method. The subject of this study was 32 students taken by using proportional
random sampling as representatives of the population. Questionnaire was used to
obtain the main source of data. The analysis result of the research findings
disclosed that almost all students in this study had a negative perception on their
speaking problems. In fact, the majority of students showed a negative perception
and only few students indicated their perception in good scale. Opportunity and
classroom climates had the strongest influence on students‟ perception with the
percentage of 36%. The percentages of other influencing factors were student
factor (33%), and the last speaking difficulties were having the weakest influence
with the percentage of (31%). Briefly, the survey result showed a negative
outcome. Therefore, there were two findings that the lecturer must pay attention
for the sake of betterment: a) more than a half of students studying speaking
experience problems on opportunities and classroom climates in practicing
speaking, b) most students would rather to be silent or quiet due to feeling afraid
of making mistake in speaking class instead of trying to speak.
