Abstract

The research was conducted to find out the effectiveness of Diary for teaching
writing recount text. The population of the research was all of the second grade
students of SMPN 1 Kalimanah in academic year 2003-2014. The total population
was 272. Purposive sampling was used to take the sample of the research. There
were two classes as participants. First class 8E as experimental class and second
class 8F as control class. This research was conducted in April to May, starting
from 21st of April to 17th of May 2014. Diary was implemented in experimental
class but not in control one. Pre test was given to know the early students writing
competence both in the control and experimental class. At the end there was a
post test that given for experimental and control class. The result of T-test
calculation was 3.03, while the T-table value at the level of significant α 0.05 for
degree of freedom (df) 65 was 1.669. It means that t-test was higher than t-table
(3.03 > 1.669). Based on previous description, it could be concluded that the use
of Diary was effective for teaching writing recount text, so the hypothesis was
accepted.
