The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of mind mapping to teach
writing of a descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Cilacap
in the academic year of 2013/2014.

research was quasi experiment. The total sample was 72 respondents. The respondents were
divided into control and expe
riment class. In collecting data, the writer used test as
instrument. The test was administered twice. The first

was pre

was post
-test. The test was essay test in the form of writing based on certain theme. After
getting the dat
a the writer used t
-test to analyze the data collected.
Based on the result, it was found that mind mapping is effective to teach writing of a
descriptive text. It could be seen from the improvement of the test result of experiment class
which improved from 726 (the pre-test result) to 924 (the post test result) which was

than that of the control class 668 (the pre
-test result) to 820 (the post
-test result). Beside that,
the effectiveness could be seen from the result of t

it can be concluded that teaching writing of a descriptive text
using mind mapping was effective.
