The aims of this research were: (1) finding out the students mastery in
using Future tense, especially in using will, shall and BE going to. (2) finding out
the common errors made by the students.
The method of this research was descriptive quantitative The population of
this research was the third year students of SMP Negeri I Tambak in the academic
year 2009/2010, consisting 240 students from six classes. Here, the writer took
15% of the population as the sample. The total number of sample in this research
was 36 students. The instrument used to collect the data was a test.
After the data was analyzed, it was found that the mean of student’s
mastery was 58,66%, and the writer revealed that the student’s mastery in using
future tense was fair. Based on the result of the error analysis, it was found that
the errors made by students were in incomplete application of rules and false
concept hypothesized errors.
