Abstract

This research is aimed to observe the significance of archetypal pattern within
Percy Jackson’s journey based on the archetypal pattern by Joseph Campbell in
Rick Riordan’s novel Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. This is a qualitative study
applying structuralism approach. The data source of this research is Rick
Riordan’s Novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (2005) that contains Greek
mythology story. It was then analyzed using a key theory of monomyth from
Joseph Campbell (1949). Those are consisting of three stages namely Departure,
Initiation and Return. This graduating thesis revealed the significance of the
archetypal pattern within Percy Jackson’s journey, in which Percy Jackson must
face the challenges by passing three steps in his journey. The first stage is
departure which Percy begins his journey by learning how to survive and face
anything to complete his quest. The second stage is initiation in which Percy
Jackson has to survive and fight fully against the enemies. He had to save his
mortal mother and got back the Master Bolt to prove that he was not the one
who stole it. The third stage is the return in which Heroes have the freedom to
live, between ordinary world and underworld also becomes the masters of two
worlds. Percy includes of those worlds.
