Abstract

Background: Kidney stones are mineral deposits found in the calyx and pelvis that
are found freely or attached to the renal papilla. Calcium oxalate is the main
constituent of most kidney stones. Imperata cylindrical L. (Cogongrass) is one of
the plants that is often used to treat kidney stones. One of the chemical compounds
contained in cogongrass roots is flavonoids. Flavonoids can play a role in helping
dissolve kidney stones. The aim of this research was to look at the total flavonoid
content of cogongrass roots and knowing how the calcium decay activity of kidney
stones was carried out. Method: The extraction using the maceration and
soxletation methods with a 96% ethanol solvent and the determination of kidney
stone calcium decay activity using the in vitro method. Results: The kidney stone
calcium decay activity of Alang-Alang root extract with maceration and soxletation,
respectively, produced dissolved calcium levels of 10.144 ± 0.557 mg/L and
soxletation 7.843 ± 0.474 mg/L. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of cogongrass roots
using the maceration extraction method provides better kidney stone calcium decay
activity compared to the soxletation method.
