Abstract

Sociolinguistics is an academic discipline investigating the interconnection between
human language and society, where each community group has a unique language style
when communicating. The diversity of language styles provides an opportunity to mix
languages in their conversations, known as code-mixing in sociolinguistics. This
practice is prevalent in society, including among TikTokers in Indonesia, such as Oza
Rangkuti, the Podcast Kesel Aje’s account owner. Therefore, the primary aims of this
study are to classify the types of code mixing, explain its functions, and explain how
the conversation unfolds in the TikTok video of Podcast Kesel Aje. This analysis uses
Muysken's (2000) theory of code-mixing as the basis for classification, Hoffman's
(1991) theory to explain the functions of code-mixing, and Dell Hymes' (1972) theory
to describe the conversational dynamics in the video. The analysis showed 20 codemixing
types, with 18 instances of Insertion, two cases of Congruent Lexicalization,
and no instances of Alternation. In addition, the study identified 21 cases of the function
of code-mixing in the speaker's discourse: 13 instances of Talking about particular
topics, one instance of Being emphatic about something, five cases of Expressing group
identity, and two instances of Intentionally clarifying speech content for the
interlocutor.
