Abstract
This current research is to describe code-switching in the teaching process. This research investigated the types of code-switching used by EFL teachers in the classroom and the reasons EFL teachers apply code-switching. A descriptive-qualitative was applied in this study. The research participants were two EFL teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Kembaran with code-switching experience when teaching. Observations and interviews were used as data collection techniques. A narrative analysis using an interactive model was used to analyze the data. The data analysis indicated three types of code-switching applied by EFL teachers: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. In addition, the research also found four reasons for using code-switching in EFL classes: improving students’ understanding, building social relationships, reducing the students’ nervousness, and managing the classroom.
