Abstract

Becoming a professional teacher means acquiring the necessary competencies acquired through formal studies in particular fields and understanding the educational and teaching tasks. Teacher professionalism can be formed at the beginning of choosing a career, students who choose a career to become a teacher will try to carry out their duties by the competencies obtained while studying. Additionally, professional teachers must have a genuine interest and passion, which might be nurtured during the study or affected by the environment. This research aimed to determine the perceptions of the teaching profession on students' beliefs in choosing a career as a teacher and the factors that influence students to choose a career as a teacher. In this research, researchers used qualitative research. This type of research uses a phenomenology approach using an interview instrument and purposive sampling. The data that has been obtained from the interview is transcribed. The data collection technique uses deductive coding, which is analysed using theme analysis which has been divided into sub-themes. From this sub-theme, we can find out what factors influence students to choose a career as a teacher. The results of this research, from students' perceptions of the belief in the teaching profession as a reason for choosing a career to become a teacher, are influenced by the benefits of being a teacher and the challenge. The factors that influence students to choose a career as a teacher, it is divided into internal and external factors. Internal factors are influenced by (Self–efficacy and motivation and talent), and external factors are influenced by (Financial security, encouragement from the parents, civil servants, encouragement from the parents, and the background of the family's parents as teachers).
