Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the students` preferences in using reading strategies for reading comprehension. This research is a descriptive quantitative research with a survey method. The subjects of this study were 31 English Education Departments at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Data collection methods used in this study were a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire instrument was adopted from the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) version of Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002). The questionnaire was analyzed using a Likert Scale and determined the mean score of each statement. To analyze the interview data, this research used data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. Based on the research that has been done, the reading strategy most chosen by students for reading comprehension was in the category of problem-solving strategy. The two reading strategies become the most preferred strategies: reading slowly and carefully and trying to refocus when losing concentration. These strategies are preferred because they believed those srtategies can help them overcome their reading comprehension difficulties.
