Abstract

Spelling errors and sentence structure are often found in mid-term assessment questions of social studies prepared by the Madrasah Principal Team (K3M) for the eighth graders of MTs in Kebumen Regency in the academic year of 2019-2020. This condition can affect the validity of the questions at school. The aims of this study were (1) to describe spelling errors and (2) to describe the sentence structure errors. The method used in this research was the observation method with the observation participatory technique. The data source of this research was the mid-term questions of social studies. The data were then analyzed using the distributional method with deletion and substitutions techniques. The results showed that in the mid-term questions of social studies for the eighth-graders of MTs in the academic year of 2019-2020, there were 46 spelling errors and 7 sentence structure errors. Spelling errors included 13 data, consisting of 5 data for capital letter errors, 5 data for Italicizing errors, and 23 data for word writing errors. Meanwhile, sentence structure errors consisted of 7 data; 5 data of question idea unity, namely errors in the subject (S), predicate (P), object (O), complement (Comp), adverb (Adv), and conjunctions; and 2 data of question cohesiveness, namely in the form of unnecessary words.
