Abstract

This study attempted to find out types of classroom activities applied by
teachers in the EFL classroom and students’ perceptions of their classroom activities
that were given by their teacher at SMP MuhammadiyahSumbang. It is kind of
descriptive survey with the population was eighth grade in junior high school
students. The total sample is 30 EFL learners. The instruments which were used are
obaervation and questionnare. The results showed that the types of classroom
activities used by teachers are (20%) self-directed learning in teacher centered
learning, (20%) collaborative learning in teacher centered learning, (20%) selfdirected
learning in student centered learning, (20%) role play and simulation in
student centered learning, (10%) collaboration learning in student centered learning,
and (10%) small group discussion in student centered learning. The main data of
students’ perceptions showed that the most students strongly agreed (31.6%), and
agreed whether the teacher used classroom activities in EFL classroom (39.2%).
Student also agreed that their participation in the classroom activities, one of the
purpose was to encourage and make them motivated (51.6%). The last was the use of
TCL and SCL in classroom activities, such as games and work in group. In which
more than a half of the students agreed with the use of TCL and SCL in classroom
activities (56.5%).
