Abstract

This research aimed to find out the impacts of social media to learn English that use by
EFL students. It used a qualitative descriptive method in which the subject of this
research was students in English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah
Purwokerto in academic 2019/2020 which was taken randomly. The total subject were
103 students taken from the second semester until eight semesters. The result showed
that there were positive and negative impacts of social media used by students to learn
English. There were 81,3% of respondents that showed positive impact, they are
sharing knowledge, updating oneself, learning from various sources, being prepared,
sharing what they feel or think, improve skill of English. For the second impact, there
were 75% which showed the negative impacts of social media. It was related to social
media that could reduce learning and research capabilities, reduction in real human
contact, reduces command over language usage and creative writing skills, time waste,
low grades, loss of motivation in students. However, some respondents disagreed with
some item in negative impacts with calculation 48,35%.
