Abstract
Javanese script is one of the priceless cultural heritages. The need to maintain cultural
heritage is important for the generation of the Indonesian nation. Javanese script
learning is integrated in local content known as Javanese language subjects. The
situation in the field shows that learning Javanese script in schools cannot run
optimally. The results of the initial study and some supporting data obtained from
observations by the collaborator team, it was found that in learning Javanese script,
teachers still use media, and methods that are less varied. The formulation of the
problem that is of concern in this study is how to plan and implement Javanese script
learning with the Java Maca Book (BUMAJA), and how the effectiveness of the
Javanese script learning outcomes with the Javanese Maca Book. Effectiveness is the
relationship between output and goals or it can also be said to be a measure of how far
the level of output, policies and procedures of the organization (Beni 2016: 69). Media
can be interpreted as an intermediary between the giver and recipient of the message,
both in print and electronic form (Indrianan, 2011: 13). Reading is the translation of
symbols into sound in the form of words and then arranged so that we can learn to
understand and we can make catalogs (Cahyani, 2009: 95). Javanese script or better
known as Hanacaraka or Carakan is a script derived from the Brahmi script originating
from India (Arismadhani, 2013:1). This research method uses mixed methods with a
concurrent embedded design. The population studied in this study were third grade
students of Panusupan Gugus Elementary School, while the sample was selected from
two schools, namely SDN 2 Panusupan as the experimental class, and SDN 1
Panusupan as the control class. Data collection instruments in the form of observations,
tests, and interviews. Quantitative data analysis used parametric t-test statistics
between groups, while qualitative data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model.
The results of the post test reading skills obtained the average value (mean) of the
experimental class, namely, 83.33 while for the control class, which is 67.03, it can
indicate that the mean of the experimental class is greater than the mean value of the
control class. The results of the data analysis test with the Independent Sample T-test
obtained the value of tcount = 4,387, while the ttable in the table with a significance
level of 5% is 2,014. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the use
of BUMAJA on the skills of reading Javanese script in the third grade of SD Negeri 2
Panusupan. The results of interviews conducted with three sources (teachers, students,
and parents / guardians of students, concluded that BUMAJA is more effective in
improving children's reading skills in Javanese script compared to the method
commonly used so far, because it contains a way to distinguish the shape and sound of
the script. Java that is easy for students to remember.
