Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has transformed teaching learning process from face-to-face learning to online learning. This changing situation leads barriers for English language teachers in conveying their teaching learning process. That’s why English language teachers should be able to adopt to those challenges by applying some strategies due to online learning so that the learning objective can be well achieved. Thus, this study aims to investigate English language teachers’ challenges and explore teachers’ strategies in implementing online learning. This study employed a qualitative approach. Seven English language teachers in Cilacap Regency participated in this research. They were selected based on the consideration of having at least five years of teaching experience and had attained teacher’s certification. The researcher used primary data from interviews and secondary data from documents to collect qualitative data. The researcher followed the theory of Miles and Huberman to analyze the data from interview namely coding, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Meanwhile, the data from documents study was analyzed using content analysis. The study revealed that the challenges faced by the English language teachers were internet connection problem, lack of students’ participation, lack of students’ motivation in completing the task, unsupported device, and limited infrastructure support. To meet those challenges, English language teachers had adaptations in the form of adapting lesson plan, improving their competency, and adapting the material. Some strategies to convey the challenges above were selecting simple online learning platform, monitoring students’ learning process, contextualizing material to daily life, giving feedback, and collaboration with students’ parents. Meanwhile, the implication of online learning towards the students are dealing with the decreasing of students’ competence and behavior. Further research recommends to investigate blended learning as the other method in conducting teaching learning process in the pandemic era.
