Abstract

Online learning was a new method that has been applied thoroughly during the pandemic. This was certainly a new thing for most teachers, because previously the school implementation carried out offline activities. This attracted the attention of researchers about what challenges an English teacher must face and their solutions. During online learning, many students find it difficult to learn foreign languages. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the challenges experienced by English teachers during online teaching and learning. This data was collected through interviews with English teachers at SMP N 4 Kalibagor. Then the data is processed through 3 stages, namely; data reduction, data display and data verification. The results of the research from the field stated that there were seven challenges; lack of student’s facilities, lack of technology skills, passive students, limited time, less effective, decreased student learning outcomes and teacher’s professionalism. Then, five solutions; the school provides the smartphones and internet quota, study group, offline class, home visits and approach the students personally. The challenges that have occurred have proven to be solved with several solutions, because the learning process has been running smoothly.
