Abstract
Background: Simvastatin is a drug to decreasing cholesterol levels. Garlic has ability to reduce total cholesterol levels in the blood, but it is still not discovered the dose that could give optimal results. Nowadays, many people combine conventional medicine and natural medicine to get optimal results. This research aim to find out the optimal result in utilization Garlic that consumed together with simvastatin in decreasing total Cholesterol levels in rats fed high cholesterol. Method: This research used 28 male white Wistar Strain rats divided into 7 groups. All the group except the normal control group were given high cholesterol for 28 days, while for antihypercholesterolemic effect test was carried out for 20 days. Simvastatin dose used for animal test was 0,9 mg/kg BW/day. There were 3 doses of garlic that was 50,75 and 100 mg/kg BB. Total cholesterol levels were measured using the CHOD-PAP reagent kit using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Result: the result indicated that using the combination of simvastatin and garlic singly, there was not significant difference. However, when giving a combination of 0,9 mg/kg BW/day simvastatin and 100 mg/kg BW/day garlic could provide the highest antihypercholesterolemic effect compared to other groups. Conclusion: combination 0,9 mg/kg BW simvastatin and 50,75 mg/kg BW garlic have the same ability as a single simvastatin and garlic in decreasing total cholesterol levels.
