Abstract
Galangal (Alpinia galanga) is traditionally used as a spice in cooking. However, after having further studies, galangal is reported to potentially have antibacterial and antifungal. The ethanol extract of galangal rhizome is formulated into the preparation of liquid soap to prevent bacteria that cause body odor, diseases (Staphylococus epidermidis, Staphylococus aureus) and fungi that cause skin diseases (Candida albicans). This research aims to find out the proper formula of liquid soap that contains galangal rhizome extract which has good antibacterial & antifungal physical properties and activities. The preparations were made into three level variations of galangal rhizome extract, those are 3%, 5%, and 7%. The physical properties evaluations of liquid soap include organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and high foam tests. Bacterial test was carried out using the paperdisk method (Kirby Bauer). The results showed that liquid soap of galangal rhizome extract was physically stable. Assessed from the effectiveness of its therapy against S. aureus, it had antibacterial activity which was categorized as weak. On the other hand, it had antifungi activities which was categorized as strong against C. albicans. From three tested formulation, the best result of antibacterial and antifungi was found in the third formulation with 7% concentration of galangal rhizome extract.
