Abstract

Background: Currently, wound dressing techniques are developing rapidly, one of them is use of hydrogels. The use of PVA alone as a hydrogel base will have poor mechanical strength. The addition of PEG base is expected to improve the mechanical strength of hydrogel wound dressings. The use of plant extracts is currently in great demand because of its properties and its wide numbers in Indonesia. So a hydrogel wound dressing based on PVA and PEG was made using the active substance from the ethanol extract of avocado leaves (Persea americana mill.) To treat burns using the literature review method. Method : The method used is synthetic analysis using a literature review to estimate the composition of the formula using the design expert application to obtain the optimum formulation. Hydrogel made with the freez – thaw method is thought to increase hydrogen bonding and exposed to gamma irradiation is thought to increase the resistance of the active substance in the wound dressing hydrogel matrix. Results : Phytochemical screening extract of avocado leaves produced flavonoids, tannins and saponins which had burn healing activity. The use of expert design software can produce optimal wound dressing hydrogel formulas based on PVA and PEG and produce tensile strength mechanical properties in the range 1.02-10.20 N / mm2, elongation at break> 200%, and low modullus young based on literature review results. The use of PVA and PEG crosslinked well with CaCl2 crosslinker and confirmed from FTIR data. Conclusion : Using PVA and PEG bases allows the formation of hydrogel wound dressings with good mechanical strength and the use of the Design Expert software with the D-Optimal Design method is considered to be able to estimate the optimum formulation according to the desired target based on a literature review.
