Abstract

This research aimed to describe the students’mathematical problem solving in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 4 Purwokerto viewed from the personality types of David Keirsey. It was a descriptive qualitative research. The samples were obtained using purposive sampling. This research took two respondents for each personality types which were : guardian personality typed students, artisan personality typed students, rational personality typed students, and idealistic personality typed students. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire for categorizing their personality types, mathematical problem solving test, and guided interview. The data analysis using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion while the validation test was triangulation technique test. The outcome shows that: 1) students of four personality types have the same skill in solving problem based on plan, 2) in the rechecking process of procedure and result, it can be categorized in two types consisting of guardian and rational types are able to check procedure and result while artsan and idealistic types are only able to check the procedure, 3) students from the four types of personality have different ways to do the steps of understanding the problem and making the finishing plan.
