Abstract

Indonesia is a country with almost entirely tropical and has sunlight exposure
throught the season. The negative impact of sun exposure include tanning,
sunburn and even skin cancer. Temu Hitam is plant that contain alcaloid,
polyphenols, saponins, flavonoids, essential oil and curcuminoid. Phenolic
compounds and flavonoid which has an antioxidant activity, and has sunscreen.
Extract and purified extract Temu Hitam rhizome contain flavonoid, alcaloid,
tannin, steroid, terpenoid and curcuminoid. The purpose of this study was to
determine the total phenolic level and SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of the
extract and purified extract from Temu Hitam rhizome. Extraction method using
maceration method and purification method using liquid-liquid techniques and
stirring and determination of total phenolic levels using follin-ciocalteu method
by measuring the levels using a instrument spectrophotometric UV-VIS. Total
phenolic content of extract ethanol 48,106 ± 0,379 mg GAE/gram sample,
purified extract I 64,518 ± 0,578 mg GAE/gram sample and purified extract II
69,317 ± 1,652 mg GAE/gram sample. Determination of SPF value by in vitro
method using spectrophotometry from ethanol extract 5,60 ± 0,02 (moderate
protection), purified extract I 8,26 ± 0,03 (maximal protection), and purified
extract II 8,69 ± 0,01 (maximal protection). The purified extract has higher
phenolic and SPF value compared to ethanol extract.
