Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to describe the way to turn taking
on Live with Trio Lestari Talk Show. The data of this research were the utterances of
performers on Live with Trio Lestari Talk Show while the data sources were from the
utterances of the Hosts and the Guests. There were two episodes that were studied in
this research. In providing the data this research used observation method with
tapping technique, Uninvolved Conversation Observation technique, recording
technique, and note-taking technique. The data were analyzed using identity method
and displayed using informal method. The results of this research showed there were:
(1) 30 utterances, (2) 14 stolen utterances, (3) 36 seized utterances, (4) 5 replaced
utterances, (5) 2 created utterances, and (6) 24 continued utterances. On each turn
taking included adjacency pairs such as; (1) the pair of questioning and answering
and emphasizing, (2) the pair of taking, approving, rejecting, returning, and
emphasizing compliment, (3) the pair of complaining and emphasizing an excuse, (4)
the pair of asking and rejecting invitation, (5) the pair of accepting, emphasizing,
rejecting, and postponing order, (6) the pair of accepting, emphasizing, and rejecting
offer, (7) the pair of answering and emphasizing a call, (8) the pair of asking and
rejecting the utterance of permission, and (9) the pair granting a permission and the
function of utterance; instrumental, regulator, interactional, personal, heuristics, and
imaginative.
