Abstract

This research attempted to show EFL students’ perceptions in the use of dictioary applications. The research was conducted in Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, Central Java. The researcher took 50 students from the total 90 students of 6th semester as samples for this research involving from 3 classess because the researcher used purposive sampling. This research used questionnaire and interview as the data collection. The questionnaire result were tabulated into percentage then interpreted to explore the students’ perceptions, and the responses from the interview were transcribed, and interpreted to clarify the finding from questionnaire. The result was showed that 76.35% of students perceived positively towards the use of dictionary applications to learn English. Communicative function of dictionary applications showed that 84.75% of students perceived positively. Cognitive function of dictionary applications showed that 78.37% of students perceived positively. The advantages of dictionary applications showed that 84.40% of students perceived positively. However, in disadvantages of dictionary applications, respondents perceived negatively (57.90%). The reasons of their positive perceptions toward the use of dictionary applications were that the applications could make a text, translate the words, look for synonyms, listening the correct pronunciations, help doing assignment, revise the wrong spelling, mark the wrong words, improve the vocabularies, the applications had no limits and very fast and simple to useP.
