Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the English teachers’ perception on the
necessity of learning grammar to improve students’ speaking skill. The kind of
this research was descriptive research which survey as the method. The focus of
this research was the English teachers’ perception on the whether or not of the
importance of learning grammar to improve students’ speaking skill. The
respondents were all or 22 of English teachers in all or 5 state senior high schools
in Purwokerto. By using questionnaire as the instrument, this research showed
positive perception from the English teachers which means that there was
agreement that learning grammar was important for improving students’ speaking
skill. For that reason, it was recommended that to improve students’ speaking skill
the learners can learn grammar in learning English.
