Abstract

This research was carried out in order to reveal the extent of the students‘ pronunciation problems in EFL class at the first-year student‘s batch 2018 in English Education Department. Descriptive quantitative research was used as a method of this research and 28 students was selected as a sample of this research. In addition, pronunciation test and interview was used to collect the data. The result showed the first-year students of English Education Department, batch 2018 faced difficulties in pronouncing 5 English vowel sounds (monophthongs) namely sound / i: /, /e/, /ə/, / ᴐ: /, / a: /, 3 English vowel sounds (diphthongs) namely sound / iə /, / aƱ /, / ai /, and 4 consonants sound namely sound / ӡ /, / p /, / f /, / v/, in segmental feature. In suprasegemntal feature ―stress‖, the respondents faced difficulties some problems as well in pronouncing the stress word in the two syllabic and three syllabic words. In two syllabic words, they faced difficulties of pronouncing words tress in 6 sounds, namely sound / ӡ /, / i: /, / e /, / ᴐ: /, / iə /, / ə /. 6 sounds also faced by the respondents in the three syllabic words, namely sound / iə /, / ə /, / ai /, / Ʊə /, / θ /, / ʃ /.
