Abstract

Betel leaf extract has effectiveness on wound healing better than povodine iodine
and minimize the formation of scar tissue. In this study, betel leaf extract is
formulated into a wound dressing composition of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and
glycerine are optimized. Polyvinyl alcohol as a film-forming polymer that is
transparent, strong, but less elastic plastic so it needs to be added plasticizers such
as glycerin to reduce the intermolecular bonds along the polymer chain so that the
film showed greater flexibility. Optimization is done using the D-Optimal Design
criteria mechanical properties of tensile strenght, elongation at break and
modullus young. The optimum formula was obtained based on the desirability
approaching a value of 1. Results showed the optimum formula wound dressing
betel leaf extract with a composition of PVA 7% and glycerin 5% with a value of
0.659 desirability. In the resulting wound dressing composition betel leaf extract
with characteristics of tensile strengh 7.107 N/mm2, elongation at break 530.9%
and young modullus 0,964 MPa. Based on the results of this study concluded that
the composition of the PVA 7% and glycerin 5% generates the optimum formula
wound dressing of betel leaf extract according to the criteria desired mechanical
properties.
