This research aimed to improve the student's mathematical understanding ability
on mathematics through scientific approach. The subjects of this research were 33
eighth graders class B of SMP N 1 Padamara. This research was done in three
cycles consisting of two meetings in each cycle that included planning, acting,
observing, and reflecting. An evaluation test on mathematical understanding was
done to measure the student's mathematical understanding ability. The results
showed that the average score of cycle I was 40.9, cycle II was 60.15, and cycle
III was 63.3. The conclusion was that Problem Solving learning method with
Scientific approach was able to improve mathematical understanding ability on the
eighth graders class B of SMP N 1 Padamara especially on geometry.
