Abstract

Writing a readable abstract is very important, since the function of abstract
text is as the representation of the whole content of the research. It is become
guidance for the reader to recognize the summary of the research therefore the
sentences and paragraphs in the abstract text should be unity.
The objective of this study is to identify the cohesive device in achieving the
coherence. This research applied descriptive qualitative design and the data were
in the form of sentences. The instrument was the researcher herself. It means the
researcher makes an interpretation and description of the data that she analyzes.
The object of the study are 25 abstracts section which written by English
education students’ of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in 2018, and the
researcher take the abstract section ramdomly in repository UMP. The technique
of analysis involved categorization of cohesion namely, grammatical and lexical
cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and the categorization of
coherence namely, repeating key noun, consistent pronoun, transition signals and
logical order proposed by Oshima and Hogue (2006).
The finding shows that there are 652 instances of cohesion used in abstract
text and 199 instances of coherence from the total occurrences in 25 of abstract
text. It can be concluded that the students to be competent well in producing
cohesion to achieve coherent in writing abstract texts. They utilized all types of
cohesion at their writing abstract texts, beside that they applied all types of
coherence at their abstract text.
