Abstract

The aim of study was to determine the effectiveness of problem based
learning models in improving student’s ability to write news texts at12th grade of
SMK Negeri 3 Purwokerto and determine the differences of effectiveness between
problems based learning models and conventional methods. This research was
designed with a quasi-experiment. Samples were taken from students of 12th grade of
SMK Negeri 3 Purwokerto. The research instrument used the ability to write news
texts. The data analysis technique uses a different test (t-test). The results showed that
the problem based learning model of learning can improve the ability to write news
texts. Based on the results of the paired t test analysis calculations obtained t value =
17.157 higher wit t table 2,035. This can be seen from the significant increase in the
pre-test post-test value. The average pre-test score was 76.94, increasing to 86.65 in
post-test results with an increase of 9.71 points. The conclusion of this research is the
problem based learning model is effective in improving the ability to write news texts.
