Abstract

The study was aimed at finding out the factors that caused failing students
(students who repeated the same grade in the next academic year), finding out the
role of teachers and parents in helping to overcome the handicaps that caused
failing students, and finding out the strategies of both teachers and principle in
helping to improve the students' learning success in SD Negeri 1 Slarang.
Descriptive qualitative approach with case study method was used in this study.
The participants were the principle, the teacher of grade V, the teacher of grade V
in the previous year, another class teacher, the students' parents and five failing
students in grade V. The data were collected by doing observation, field notes and
document analysis. The data were validated by using technique and source
triangulation methods. The data were analyzed by processing and preparing data,
reading the entire data, analyzing in more detail by coding data, applying coding
processes, linking themes or descriptions and interpreting data. The result
revealed that there were internal and external factors that caused failing students
in SD Negeri 1 Slarang. The internal factors were in the form of not achieving
Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM), participant's physical condition, lazy
learning factors, and unfavorable learning attitude factors. The external factors
were family factors. The role of teachers and parents to handle students living in
classes were by conducting guidance and giving attention to students. The
strategies of teachers and principals were by conducting guidance, motivating,
coordinating with parents of students, health checks and intelligence checks.
