Abstract

This research explores the perceptions of undergraduate students in the English Language Education program at a private university in Purwokerto regarding the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework in online learning environments. The CoI framework, composed of cognitive presence, teaching presence, and social presence, serves as a model for facilitating meaningful educational experiences in digital learning contexts. Utilizing a quantitative survey method, data were collected from 46 students through a structured questionnaire comprising 34 items aligned with the three aspect components of the CoI. The findings indicate that students perceived cognitive presence most positively, reflecting high engagement in critical thinking and knowledge construction. Teaching presence also received strong affirmation, highlighting the importance of clear instruction and effective facilitation by instructors. However, social presence was the least perceived dimension, suggesting a need for improved strategies to foster interaction and emotional connection among learners. This research underscores the value of the CoI framework in designing effective online education while identifying critical areas, particularly social engagement, for future development and research.
