This is pragmatics study that aims to identify politeness strategies used by main
character in the movie and find out the factors that influence the main character to
employ the used of politeness strategies. The data for this research came from
utterances of main character. This study used descriptive qualitative method to
analyze politeness strategies used by the main character and find out the factors
influence the main character. The theory used in this research is politeness theory
proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this study showed that there
are four strategies used by the main character namely Bald on Record 18 times
(34%), Positive Politeness 16 times (30%), Negative Politeness 14 times (26%),
and Off Record 5 times (10%). Moreover, the analysis shows that not all substrategies
is used. The sub strategy used in positive politeness show is Give gifts to
H, Exaggerate, Seek Agreement, Offer Promised, Be Optimistic, Notice, attend to
H, Avoid disagreement, Use in group identity marker. Negative Politeness sub
strategy used Being deference, Using question hedge, Be conventionally indirect,
Be pessimistic, Apologize, Minimize the impositions Rx. Off Record sub strategy
used Give associate clue, Being ironic, Use metaphor, Understate, Use
contradiction. The result also shows that there are two factors influenced the main
character to employ politeness strategies namely payoff and relevant circumstance.
Payoff showed when speaker want to get something from hearer and also fulfill
hearer wants and relevant circumstance showed that rank of imposition dominated
the main character to employed politeness strategies.
