Abstract

This research is entitled "The Forms of the Main Character's Struggle in 'The Best
Gift' Novel by J.S. Khairen: A Study of Literary Psychology." The aim of this study
is to describe the forms of the main character's life struggle in the J.S. Khairen's
novel. This research adopted a qualitative descriptive approach to describe and
analyze the various forms of the main character's life struggle in the novel using
literary psychology. The data for this research consisted of words, phrases,
dialogues, and sentences that indicate the main character's attitude towards life
struggle in 'The Best Gift' novel . The primary data source for this research is the
novel 'The Best Gift' by J.S. Khairen, published by PT. Gramedia Widiasarana
Indonesia in July 2022, with a total of 245 pages. This novel is
the second edition printed in 2022. Data collection involved reading the novel as a
data source, identifying relevant information, sorting data into tables, and analyzing
the data using the following techniques: 1) Data reduction, 2) Data presentation,
and 3) Drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the research, various forms of
the main character's life struggle in 'The Best Gift' novel by J.S. Khairen are
identified according to Abraham Maslow's theory, including: (1) physiological
needs with 6 instances, (2) safety needs with 9 instances, (3) love and belongingness
needs with 18 instances, (4) esteem needs with 5 instances, and (5) selfactualization
needs with 2 instances.
