Abstract

Deivis, Dea Nervi Sabaranti 1909010030. 2023: A Sociolinguistics Analysis of Language Style In “The Silent Child” Short Movie. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research aims to find out the language style used by normal people to communicate with deaf people. The researcher used Martin Joos' (1967) language style theory and Fujishin's (2009) communication type theory. The researcher used qualitative descriptive methods. The source data for this study was the movie, “The Silent Child” (2017). The data taken were the communication between the characters including those involving the child having a hard-hearing problem. She couldn’t communicate normally.
Based the analysis, this study comes to these conclusions. First, the researcher found four types of language style in the movie: formal style 24 (20%), casual style 64 (54%), consultative style 9 (7%), and intimate style 20 (17%), while the frozen style was not found is due to the limited scene of the short movie, there is no occasion in which the characters should employ a frozen style in their talks. The language style used by the deaf in the movie is casual and intimate. Second, the researcher found out two types of communication, Verbal and Non-Verbal. The way deaf people communicate with normal people uses a combination of verbal (oral and writing) and nonverbal are kinect (expression, eye contact, body posture, and gesture) and haptic (interaction through touching).
