This research is motivated by the use of WhatsApp groups during remote learning in MI Muhammadiyah Karangsari due to its easiness compared to Google Classroom. This research aimed to detennine the use of WhatsApp groups in remote learning for the fifth grade of MI Muhammadiyah Karangsari
during the Covid-19 pandemic and to find out the obstacles and solutions that were carried out to overcome the obstacles faced. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research include the principal, fifth-grade techer, 5 fifth-grade students, and 5 students parents. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and document analysis. The data validity was tested using techniques and data triangulation. Data analysis techniques employed data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the use of WhatsApp groups in online learning for fifth grade had gone quite well, hut there were still ohstacles encountered during the learning process including limited internet network or signal, limited internet data packages, lack of students' enthusiasm in participating in learning, and students' difficulties in understanding the learning material. The solutions to overcome the obstacles include: students must make preparations before learning begins, parents make every effort so that children can continue to follow online learning using WhatsApp groups, teachers and parents always provide advice and motivation to children, and teachers carry out horne visits.
