Abstract

Reading comprehension is a reading process carried out to understand the
contents of the text comprehensively, and it is very necessary for students,
especially in higher grades. This study aimed to reveal the reading comprehension
problems experienced by students in grade IV of SD Negeri 3 Kotayasa and to
discover the efforts made by the teacher to improve the students' reading
comprehension skills. This was a qualitative study with a case study approach.
The participants were classroom teachers, students, and parents. Data collection
techniques employed interviews, observation and documentation. The validity of
the data utilized data triangulation and methodological triangulation. The results
discovered that the fourth grade students of SD Negeri 3 Kotayasa did not
understand the contents of the text comprehensively, the level of students'
comprehension in reading was still low. It was because the students tended to be
reluctant to read and failed to understand the material explained by the teacher
during remote learning .. The efforts conducted by the teacher to improve reading
comprehension were guiding students in the WhatsApps Group. The reading skills
of students can be illustrated from the reading material read at home.
