Abstract

Arlidia, Salma, 1809010027. Nurhayati, S. 2023: The Perspective of Meilin’s Family on the Myth of Puberty as Seen in Turning Red movie. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
Puberty is the stage in a person's life when their body begins to mature physically. Meilin, the main character of Turning Red movie, experiences this process. This research aims to reveal the perspective of Meilin’s family on the myth of puberty in Turning Red movie. In analyzing this research, the researcher applied the sociology of literature theory by Alan Swingewood (1972), and the abjection theory by Julia Kristeva (1982). The primary data of this research is selected scenes in Turning Red movie in its Disney+ Hotstar website. This research used qualitative method with the purpose to provide deep analysis of the data.
The findings revealed some puberty phases experienced by the main character, which are honoring her parents, having responsibilities, starting like a boy band, turning into a red panda (puberty), being upset, trying to be calm, and accepting herself. From those phases, there are three perspectives from Meilin’s family, namely the mother, father, and grandmother. First, the mother, Ming’s attitude toward her daughter was influenced by statements about the puberty myth in society, such as menstruation is taboo, embarrassment, and so on. Second, from the father’s perspective, Jin’s attitude toward his daughter was more open. He gave Meilin strength and comfort as she went through puberty. Last, the grandmother’s protective attitude toward Meilin was influenced by Chinese beliefs that menstruation is dirty, harmful, and so on.
