Gender causes the mathematical literacy and self-directed learning abilities of male and female students different; it can be viewed from the way students solve math problems. This study aimed to describe mathematical literacy and self-directed learning abilities on MAN 1 Banyumas students in terms of gender with the algebraic limit function learning material. The subjects of this study were grade 11 social 1 students with a purposive sampling technique. Students were divided into two groups, namely male and female students which are taken three students for each. A qualitative method was employed in this study as an analysis data technique which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The data collection method in this study were a mathematical literacy test, self-directed learning questionnaire, interviews, and documentation. The study results showed that the mathematical literacy skill of male students reached communication and problem-solving level. The mathematical literacy skill of female students reached communication, problem-solving, and interpreting or concluding solutions. The results of self-directed learning study on male and female students are both of them have a strong desire to learn, can take decisions and initiative to deal with problems, are responsible for all learning activities, and are more confident in carrying out tasks independently.
