Abstract

The study aimed to analyze students' difficulties in solving story problems based on Krulik and Rudnick's stages in the material of two-variable linear equation systems. It was a descriptive qualitative study. The subjects were the students of grade VIII D SMP Negeri 1 Kembaran. They were selected by using a purposive sampling technique. There were 9 students who were classified into three categories, namely high, medium, and low category. Each category consisted of 3 students. The data were collected by using written tests, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis techniques were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that the high category students had difficulties in the stage of solving and looking back and extending. The students in the medium category had difficulties in the stages of selecting a strategy, solving, and looking back and extending. The students in the low category had difficulties in the stages of exploring, selecting a strategy, solving, and looking back and extending so that students were only able to write down what was known and asked. They were
also unable to proceed to the next stage.
