Abstract

Listening is really important in life. Not only in the workfield and school, but
it is also needed in daily life. Along with the other English skills, listening is very
crucial in the process of acquiring the language learners. When listening to English
language, learners might face listening comprehension problems. It is important to find
out the problems so that the teacher and the students will understand that they have to
resolve the problems. This study describes listening comprehension problems faced by
second semester students of English Education Department of UMP. This study
employs both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. Questionnaires and
Interviews were used as the research instrument. The object of this study was 63
students who finished their second semester. The result of the study showed that the
students experience five problems of listening comprehension in listening class which
include internal and external problems. Problems included in external problems were
lack of control of the speed of the speaker (66%), and limited to have things repeated
(82%). While the internal problems were limited vocabulary (74%), failure to
recognize signals (57%), and also problems related to interpretation (77%). The
dominant problem experienced by the students was inability to have things repeated
with (82%). From those explanation, it can be seen that most of that some students
experienced problems related to failure to recognize signal, but not all of the students
find the difficulties to understand the signal. As stated in the interview result, the
student was not really unfamiliar because she often read text using signs.
